For vertical risers in high-rise buildings, the choice between busway and cable trays with large cables comes down to a few measurable factors. Busway typically installs 3–5 times faster, offers lower impedance and voltage drop on long runs, and allows plug-in tap-offs at every floor without jointing. Cable remains cheaper in initial material cost and more flexible for complex routing, but requires larger shafts, more supports and costlier terminations. Most consultants now specify busway above roughly 400A per riser — the point where installation labor and lifecycle reliability decisively favor the busbar approach.
